I found out that I was pregnant on September 17, 2017. I’d had a miscarriage in March, my husband Mike and I felt nervous and excited at the same time. On March 19th I woke up and knew right away something wasn’t right. I didn’t feel good and I was having contractions. Mike rushed me to our local hospital.
On March 20th, our beautiful baby girl Peyton was born weighing just 3lbs. 12 oz. She couldn’t breathe on her own and was whisked away before I could see her.
Peyton was a medical mystery at first. I can’t begin to describe how scared and uncertain we were about what was happening to our baby. For the first few days it looked like our tiny miracle wasn’t going to make it. It took 9 long days for the doctors to agree on a course of action.
Peyton had surgery and her left kidney was removed. For 71 days we would wake up, go to the hospital, spend the day cuddling our baby, go back home to sleep, wake up and repeat. Thanks to the amazing doctors, nurses, specialists and every one of you who donates to the Sandra Schmirler Foundation we finally brought our baby home on May 20th. As fate would have it, it was her original due date.
I encourage curlers, fans, curling clubs and families to donate to the Sandra Schmirler Foundation. The funding of expensive, life-saving equipment is so very, very important. And, we all know that every baby deserves a fighting chance to grow and become a champion!
By becoming a MONTHLY supporter you are helping give these miracle babies a chance to grow up and be a champion, like Sandra.
When you join the Sandra Schmirler Foundation Champions Circle you are part of a group reaching out each month to fund life-saving equipment for families with babies born too soon, too small or too sick.
